Wargaming is on the rise again.

Or did it never falter?

Wargaming is traditionally seen in two perspectives: as a tool for professional education, training, and analysis in military and civic contexts, and as a hobby enjoyed through board and tabletop games. Both perspectives have been largely shaped by Anglo-American practices, viewpoints, and player communities. Over the last few decades, wargaming as a hobby was somewhat eclipsed by the wide-spread popularity of eurogames. Meanwhile, European wargaming communities, despite being concentrated in a relatively small geographic area, have remained mostly separated by national borders. This is due to language barriers and historical factors. As a result, the rich variety of wargaming activities in Europe often goes unnoticed by the global audience.

Euro War Games contributes to closing this gap by bringing together international wargaming practitioners, scholars, designers and players, providing thoughts, stories and research on communities, conventions, game narratives, the history of and in wargames, as well as the adaptation of mechanics across genres. This diversity in backgrounds and perspectives stimulates the understanding of wargaming as a synthetical professional and recreational practice beyond communities, borders and language barriers and point towards a bright and innovative futute.
